The film’s protagonist, a young Spaniard named Gonzalo, is an apostate in the most literal sense, as he devotes considerable time and energy to having his name removed from the baptismal records of a church that means nothing to him. This struggle, however, is clearly a cover for Gonzalo’s real crisis: an encroaching adulthood that will require him to clarify not his standing with the Church but his relations with his family and neighbors.
