Before Night Falls

Using external narration and an episodic mix of memories, this film portrays the life of the Cuban intellectual and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas (1943–90). It chronicles the poverty of his early childhood, his persecution by the Castro regime for his literature and homosexual orientation, his decision to leave Cuba during the Mariel boat-lift, and his fate as a stateless individual living in Manhattan during the AIDS crisis.
