African Diaspora International Film Festival

ADIFF NY has several films from Latin America, including:

Adios Momo (Goodbye Momo), Uruguay
Obdulio, an 11-year-old Afro-Uruguayan boy who lives in Montevideo, sells newspapers in the streets to help out with the household expenses and has no interest in attending school. One night he meets the “Maestro,” a charismatic watchman who possesses magical gifts.Through poetry and the lyrics of the “Murgas” (Carnival Pierrots) during the mythical nights of the irreverent Uruguayan carnival, the magician introduces Obdulio to a world of literacy and a different perspective about the meaning of life.

Dolares de Arena (Sand Dollars), Dominican Republic
Noelí, a young Dominican girl, goes to the beaches at Las Terrenas every afternoon. Along with her boyfriend, she looks for a way to make a living at the expense of one of the hundreds of tourists that wander around there. As people parade through her days, Noelí has a steady client: a mature French woman, who as time goes by, has found in the island the ideal refuge to spend her last years. Noelí’s boyfriend feigns to be her brother and outlines a plan in which Noelí travels to Paris with the old lady and sends him money every month. For Noelí, the relationship with the old lady is based on convenience, but feelings become more intense as the departure date closes in.
