La Ultima Latino Film Series brings documentaries, features and shorts from across Latin America to the Bay Area, with screenings at San Francisco's Roxie and Berkeley's La Pena Cultural Center. A couple highlights:
Releb'al Q'Ij (Where the Sun is Born), Guatemala
Releb'al Q'ij is a magical realist journey through the history of a people, and a response to the change of era in the Mayan calendar. The central character, Maya, passes from the time of the conquistadores to the modern era, encountering violence, visions and weaving across the centuries.
Tanta Agua, Uruguay
Alberto, a divorced father, takes his two children for a vacation at a thermal resort in Salto. Things don't turn out as planned as the non-stop rain forces them to stay indoors, away from the pools and with no TV.
San Francisco and Berkeley: June 4 - July 11. Full lineup and details here.
